Chelsea Concerts present
A VERY SPECIAL CONCERT
To honour Sir Edgar Speyer; The man who saved the Proms & his wife, Leonora, concert violinist and Pulitzer prize winning poet
On Monday, 9th November (two days before Armistice day) 2015, 7pm - 9pm
At Grosvenor Chapel, 24 South Audley Street, Mayfair, London
Supporting Veterans Aid
Chelsea Concerts are delighted to be hosting this concert, having been first acquainted with the Speyers in 2013, when they performed a concert for Veteran's Aid at Killik & Co (46 Grosvenor Street; the former home of Edgar and Leonora).
Sir Edgar Speyer was a conspicuous figure in Edwardian London; he personally financed a syndicate to run the Proms when it found itself to be bankrupt. He persuaded Elgar, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Grieg and others to perform for his programme and extended his hospitality to the composers to play at house concerts in his London home. Many of the pieces were played by Leonora on violin, with the composers at the piano. Two of which are included in this concert.
When war broke out in 1914, Sir Edgar - German by birth but a naturalised British citizen for over 20 years - found himself ostracised by society. In 1915, he and his family were forced to leave England because of their German lineage. They never returned and this concert marks the centenary of their exile. It is not until relatively recently that the Speyers have begun to be acknowledged for their contribution to London life as we know it today, and Sir Edgar is due to be acknowledged for the first time, by the BBC, at the LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS this year.
We are honoured to be joined by Tony Lentin (Professor Antony Lentin); the Biographer of Edgar Speyer, who will be introducing this concert.
The concert will comprise of pieces known to have been played or sung at the Speyer's house-concerts at Grosvenor Street and also the LONDON PREMIER of a new song cycle by David Lawrence - a setting of the poem Ballad of the Lost House by Leonora Speyer which evokes the nightmare all the family had suffered due to the eviction from their beautiful home.
Featuring Violeta Barrena (solo violin), Alexandra Kennedy (soprano), Oliver Gerrish (countertenor/alto), accompanied by Jocelyn Freeman (piano)
with guest artist MALCOLM BINNS (solo piano)
Tickets: £35 (£60 for two) to include drinks reception in interval
